Joan Van Ark (born June 16, 1943) is an American actress best known for her role as Valene Ewing in the primetime television serial opera Knots Landing. She was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. For her theatrical work, she has been recognised with a Theatre World Award and nominated for a Tony Award. She is a life member of The Actors Studio and has earned several other awards and nominations. At the age of 16, Van Ark had her professional theatrical debut at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, where she appeared in the plays The Miser and Death of a Salesman. The School for Wives marked her Broadway debut in 1966, and she was nominated for a Tony Award in the same year for her performance. The part of Valene Ewing, which she originated in 1978 on the CBS series Dallas and later played for thirteen seasons on its spin-off Knots Landing, became her most well-known role (1979-1992). In 1986 and 1989, she was nominated for and won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Actress for her performance in this character. She departed the programme in 1992, however she returned for the series’ last episode in 1993 and for the 1997 miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac, which was filmed in the same location. In 1985, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for her role as emcee of the Tournament of Roses Parade on CBS, which she won. From 2004 to 2005, she was a regular cast member on the daytime television show The Young and the Restless. In 2013, she appeared in an episode of the new Dallas television series, reprising her role as Valene.
